susanhemmings Posted 12 November , 2006 Share Posted 12 November , 2006 Volume 13 - page 230: HOWARD S - RIFLEMAN - RIFLE BRIGADE Volunteered Aug 1914 and drafted to France where he took part in numerous engagements in many sectors. During the General Retreat in March 1918 he was severely wounded and lost one of his arms. He was taken prisoner and sent to Germany where he suffered many hardships until released after the Armistice. He was discharged in 1919 as medically unfit and holds 1914 Star and General Service and Victory Medals. 32 Strickland Street, Deptford SE8 Volume 13 - page 41: BIRCHALL H - GUNNER RGA Volunteered in January 1916 and was drafted overseas in the following September and served in various parts of the line in France. Was wounded in the battle of Arras in 1917 and rejoined his Battery on his recovery and fought at Ypres, Passchendale, Kemmel Hill and in 1918 was wounded for the second time near Loos. After treatment he was in action again and Bapaume, Epechy, Le Cateau and other important engagements in the Allied Advance which ended hostilities. Returning home, he was demobilised in February 1919.
