According to my g.grandfather's medal card he served with the royal sussex, royal warwickshire and A.S.C. during WW1. He was 41 when war began and received the BWM and Victory medal. why the three regiments?

I can't speculate about the first, but I suspect that he transferred to the Army Service Corps because his age made service in the trenches too difficult.

Transfers between units were sometimes done to bring a battalion up to strength, but there is always the possibility that it was a request to join a family member serving in that unit. The former is more likely.
