At a guess, I would say he was in the 39th Siege Battery, was perhaps wounded/sick, worked for the Ministry of Munitions in the UK and then went back to the front to a different Siege battery (297th?) and then finished the war with, and possibly commanding, 196 Siege Battery.

Steve.

a visit to the NA would mean you could look for his papers as well

No, I mentioned the parent site (The Long Long Trail) as it has many informative pages, including: -

http://www.1914-1918.net/mics.htm and

http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/grandad6.htm

The medal rolls are original documents at the NA. In the case of an officer they add nothing more to what is on the MIC. You can order copies from the NA: -

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/recordc...ce=ddmenu_shop3

or ask someone going to Kew to get them for you.
