Dan Morton Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 This is an illustration probably by Liliane and Fred Funcken. If you aren't familiar with them, they authored and illustrated several books of arms and uniforms published in the late 60s and early 70s. Some of their books were published in French, some in English. The quality of this particular image with French text is poor, as you can tell, and I'd like to get a clearer and larger version. The page shows French Navy uniforms. Anybody have any idea in what book this illustration appears? Can anyone send me a clearer image? Thanks! Cnock Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Dan, I don't think this is an illustration by L. & F. Funcken. They had another style, but I can be wrong. In attachment illustrations by L. & F. Funcken - French Marine WW1 Regards, Cnock

Cnock Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Dan, I think Your illustration is much older than the sixties or seventies. Regards, Cnock
Dan Morton Posted 29 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Cnock: Again, could be. Some of the uniforms and equipment (what little I can see of them...) could be 1918 or even post war, but I think before WW2. Bit of a mystery, huh? I believe my friend found it on a French language web page. No useful attribution or information. All the best, Dan
Cnock Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Dan, I share Your opinion, post WW1. Cnock
DrB Posted 30 October , 2006 Share Posted 30 October , 2006 The Funckens were prolific but sometimes not very accurate. I would take their work with suspicion, and not as gospel. DrB
Dan Morton Posted 30 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 30 October , 2006 DrB - Thanks and I totally agree! I've found mistakes in other illustrations of theirs. But there is some doubt that the illustration in question was actually done by the Funckens. Can anybody ID it? All the best, Dan
DrB Posted 30 October , 2006 Share Posted 30 October , 2006 Dan.....I wish I could ID it, but cannot. Obviously it not the Funckens, but definately older than that. DrB

Dan Morton Posted 2 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2006 Excellent! Mystery solved. Thanks very much! Do you know of anyone who has a better resolved image of the illustration? The one on the website is obviously the same as the one above - miserable resolution. All the best, Dan
