Does this member of the BEF have a number that starts with an X it looks like X6884. Also what does it say above the R.E as his regiment is it 1 siege coy.

Can anyone else give me some info on this chap. He has a rosette on his medal bar but not sign of the clasp ever being issued, maybe someone can help me.

Ist Siege Company RE, a unit of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia), Special Reserve. The X with dots means that the number 6884 was to be impressed on his medals. It may be that there is another card for him authorising the clasp. Another possibilty is that he didn't serve within the range of enemy artillery despite the qualifying date, and added the rosette himself after the war, or somebody else has done subsequently. It has been known to happen. The rosette was intended for the medal ribbon only, when the full dress medals were not worn.

Kevin,

Have you got the Medal Rolls, specifically the 14 Star? The clasp and roses are usually but not always recorded on the roll.

I'll be at Kew on Thursday 12th if you want a look up.
