David_Bluestein Posted 7 November , 2003 Share Posted 7 November , 2003 I recieved this e-mail from an ebay seller, and thought I might put the question to the Pals, Here it is: Hi David You kindly emailed me back in June regarding a group of medals that I was going to split and you put me right and in the end they were not split up. I appreciated your knowledge in the medal field and I was hoping you could give me some more advice. I have in my possession 9 WW1 medals all from 3 members of the same family They are inscribed as follows DM2-178617 PTE F. YOUNG ASC BRITISH WAR MEDAL DM2-178617 PTE F. YOUNG ASC VICTORY MEDAL 32787 GNR M.A. YOUNG RFA STAR 32787 CPL M.A. YOUNG RFA VICTORY MEDAL 32787 CPL M.A. YOUNG RFA BRITISH WAR MEDAL PO 11417 PTE T. YOUNG RMLI STAR PO 11417 PTE T. YOUNG RMLI VICTORY MEDAL PO 11417 PTE T. YOUNG RMLI BRITISH WAR MEDAL PO 11417 B.694 T. YOUNG RMLI (MEDAL WITH SHIP DIUTURNE FIDELUS) I should imagine that they belonged to a father and his two sons. I am not a collector and I intend putting them on to Ebay. Should I put them in as one family item or should they go in under their own names. Obviously I do not want to upset any medal collectors by doing the wrong thing. Thanking you for your time
garyem1 Posted 7 November , 2003 Share Posted 7 November , 2003 Hi David, Tell him that they will fetch a lot more as a group, ( and i think they will, If they are not K.I.A ) at least they will stay together. Hope this makes some sence. gary.
Guest Jeff Floyd Posted 7 November , 2003 Share Posted 7 November , 2003 As the medal groups are not obviously noteworthy by themselves (i.e., relative to all the other pairs and trios out there), I concur that the family connection would ensure a stronger sale than piecing them out. Drummy Posted 8 November , 2003 Share Posted 8 November , 2003 I agree a collector would be more likely to bid for the family group listed as one lot, if your interested in collecting and researching then a group of relatives medals is a good buy. Max Posted 8 November , 2003 Share Posted 8 November , 2003 I think that the group should be kept together, just ensure that the seller sets a decent reserve. Andy
Alan Lines Posted 8 November , 2003 Share Posted 8 November , 2003 He should only sell them as a family set if he has positive proof that they all actually did belong to members of the same family.
Paul Reed Posted 8 November , 2003 Share Posted 8 November , 2003 Alan makes a valid point - some degree of proof is required. If their surname was Chisenhale-Marsh there would be no disputing; but there might be one or two Youngs. I knew one dealer who was forever adding 'Smith' plaques to medal groups with the same name and initial... but that was in the days long before SWD CD Roms etc. If they are related, they deserve to stay together.
