tgrubb Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 Hi Can anyone shed some light on what "Australia Station" was? I have a very old post card dated around 1908 from a distant uncle (Frederick Homard). I believe he was a stoker on HMS Powerful and Royal Sovereign. Blackblue Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 On the Australia Station would have referred to serving in Australian waters and generally being based in Australia. Rgds Tim
andyspiller Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 My g-grandfather served on two ships on the Australia station in the 1870's. So far my research shows that he got as far as some of the smaller island groups in the Pacific shuch as the Marshalls and Tristan de Cuna Rgds Andy
tgrubb Posted 2 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 2 October , 2006 Thanks Tim and Andy - that makes sense, I had wondered if it related to a specific naval base. Tim
andyspiller Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 Tim It was based in Sydney but basically refers to the whole of that part of the world as far as the Navy was concerned. One of it's Commodores, James Goodenough was killed after a battle with a group of hostile islanders. He is buried in North Sydney. If you google on him you will find some more info on the station.
