Does any one have any information with regard to HMS Karrakatta? The person that I am reserching, served on her from March 1894 upto March 1897. He joined the ship as Boy 1st Class and had reached AB by the time that he joined his next ship. He was a Devenport man.

Would anyone have a photograph of the ship?

Many thanks,

Keith

HMS KARRAKATTA (renamed for a suburb of Perth W.A.) ex HMS WIZARD, formed part of the Australian Auxilliary Squadron of the RN. She arrived in Australian waters in 1891 (together with her sister ship BOOMERANG ( ex WHITING) and remained there until 1903 when she returned to England for disposal.

Her time in Australia was uneventful.

These torpedo gunboats were a not very successful class of ship, They were of 735 tons displacement and armed with 2 x 4.7" QF guns, 4 x 3pdrs and 3 x 14" TTs. Speed 21 kts. The type was superceeded by the TBD.
