Tom Morgan Posted 30 August , 2006 Share Posted 30 August , 2006 I'm looking for books in which the writer describes a visit to the battlefields. I'm not counting "modern" battlefield guides books but would be interested in older ones. The longer ago the book was written, the better. Here are some of the ones I can think of: Not battlefield guides 13 Years After - Will R. Bird (1932) The Old Front Line - John Masefield (1917) The War Walk - Nigel H. Jones (1983) Back to the Front - Stephen O'Shea (1977) Still Quiet on the Western Front - Gene Smith (1965) The King's Pilgrimage (1922) Battlefield guides The Michelin guides (about 1920) The Pilgrim's Guide to the Ypres Salient Pub. by Talbot House (1920) Can anyone add anything to the list? IanA Posted 30 August , 2006 Share Posted 30 August , 2006 Hi Tom, Top of my list would be 'The Wet Flanders Plain' by Henry Williamson (Faber & Faber, 1929). 'How to see the battlefields' by Capt. Atherton Fleming (Cassell, 1919) counts as pretty early and has many personal and, therefore, unique references. Another early guide, obviously based on personal experience, is J.O. Coop's 'A Short Guide to the Battlefields' (Newcastle Chronicle Ltd., 1920) with 13 maps and 8 photographs. Hope this helps, Ian
