Official History of the Great War, Military Operations, France and Belgium, 1917 Volume 2, 7th June - 10th November, Messines and Third Ypres (Passchendaele).

James E Edmonds

You can get it from the inter-library loan service or buy from Tom Morgan or Naval and Military Press, personally I would recommend Tom Morgan, and not just because he is a forum member.

There aren't really that many good books on Passchendaele. You could start with 'Passchendaele : The Sacrificial Ground' (2000) by Nigel Steel and Peter Hart. This book brings together the latest critical analysis of the conduct of the battle with a wide range of first hand accounts.

I would (and did) start with Passchendaele The Untold Story by Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson. Plus points are that this book is a very good, readable history of the battle in about 250 pages. They are fairly critical of the British High Command and don't mention the attritional effects of the battle, however theirs is a very good analysis. This can be supplemented with a slightly more revisionist approach through the appropriate chapter in Gary Sheffield's Forgotten Victory.

Hope that helps,

Jon :)

In addition to the titles already mentioned, there are also two books in the "Battleground Europe" series:

"Messines Ridge" by P. Oldham

and

"Passchendaele" by N. Cave.

Both very useful in relating the 1917 battlefields to what can be seen today. In the same vein - considering what can be seen today - is the new "Pocket Battlefield Guide to Ypres and Passchendaele" by Maj. and Mrs. Holt.

Totally agree with Pillars of Fire for Passchendaele and the Untold Story and would also recommend They Called it Passchendaele.

Passchendaele - The Hollow Victory by Martin Marix Evans provides a day by day chronicle and includes such information as Biography's of the key Commanders and Orders of Battle.
