Guys

I need info on the South Africans at Arras.

Which book should I buy - please say BOTH (you can even suggest some others).

Thanks

Carl,

It's a while since I read 'Prelude' and don't recall there being much on the South Africans, although in my view it is far and away the best book on the battle - 'Cheerful' seems to have become the standard though.

I'll scan through 'Prelude' again this evening for anything on your men.

If 'Prelude to Victory' is the book by Spears, then you will be disappointed re information on the South Africans. Fantastic book though. There is Buchan's book on 'The South African Forces in France', which is the official history. Very well written.

"Cheerful Sacrifice" is an excellent book, one of the very best.

And like Robert, I highly recommend John Buchan's book on 'The South African Forces in France'.

I'm currently reading Cheerful Sacrifice and would echo what others have said. It is excellent, with a good account of the trials and tribulations of the South African Brigade.

Guys

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have Buchan and also Digby's "Pyramids and Poppies" but I am really looking for a view from the "other side of the hill".

With hindsight - a history of the 9th (Scottish) Division such as Ewing's "The History of the 9th (Scottish) Division" could also be helpful.

Thanks

Carl, not sure what you mean here. Are you interested in the German perspective?

Robert

I really want to place the South Africans in perspective (locally Delville Wood tends to dominate) and the German perspective is a good idea but I need english text/s
