Nick Posted 21 August , 2006 Share Posted 21 August , 2006 Pals, WO/95/4299 (available online) contains a plan signed by Gen Dallas on 7th October 1915 for an attack by 11th Division on the "Bench Mark" trench position, located near Jephson's Post and Kidney Hill, up Sulva way. The plan makes interesting reading. Does anyone know if the attack went ahead, and if so, what was the outcome? Regards Nick
Nick Posted 24 August , 2006 Author Share Posted 24 August , 2006 Blimey, it's not often that this group is lost for an answer. I'll soldier on and post back anything I can find. Replying to one's own posts? Is that the first sign of madness?
michaeldr Posted 24 August , 2006 Share Posted 24 August , 2006 Nick, You get top marks for effort anyway I've had a look through several books and not only have I not come across this (proposed) attack, but it is difficult to find anything on Dallas either. At about this time the GOC changed and the first serious talk of a withdrawal began to be heard: a couple of reasons for this attack perhaps not going ahead? regards Michael
Nick Posted 25 August , 2006 Author Share Posted 25 August , 2006 Michael, Indeed. None of the unit histories that I have seen (although there are plenty of others I haven't seen) tie up with an actual attack as outlined in the plan so I suspect the plan was shelved. Interesting reading though none the less. Regards Nick
