Michael Posted 28 October , 2003 Share Posted 28 October , 2003 A colleague of mine has been looking at his village memorial at Aylesford in Kent. Captain George Baxby Syddall (spelt Basby on CWGC), who was in the Canadian Infantry and attached to the RFC, is mentioned. He died in January 1918 whilst with 56 Squadron. So far he's looked at the online papers from the excellent Canadian online resource, but Id be grateful for some advice on where to look for further info. We're going to take a trip to the PRO, will we find any info there ? Any help would be most welcome, I'm new to both RFC and Canadians. Dolphin Posted 28 October , 2003 Share Posted 28 October , 2003 Captain G B Syddall of No 65 Sqn RFC was killed while flying on 4 January 1918. He was flying Sopwith Camel B2418 on a practice flight when the starboard wing collapsed while in a dive. B2418 was delivered to No 65 Sqn on 10 November 1917 and was involved in victories over an Albatros D.III on 15 November (2Lt H L Symons) and an Albatros D.V, plus a probable other, on 18 December (Maj J A Cunningham). Michael Posted 29 October , 2003 Author Share Posted 29 October , 2003 Thanks Dolphin, do you think that CWGC made a typo with 56 Sqn instead of 65 Sqn? Michael
Guest Pete Wood Posted 29 October , 2003 Share Posted 29 October , 2003 ...do you think that CWGC made a typo with 56 Sqn instead of 65 Sqn? Looks like a typo to me. Dolphin is right about 65 Sqn.
