Aaron Nelson Posted 11 August , 2006 Share Posted 11 August , 2006 Hi all, Have recently discovered a relative of ours was killed at Gallipoli. He was an Australian Light Horsemen killed on the 7th of August 1915 no less. Wondered if some kind soul would be able to take a photo of the area he attacked on the day he was killed. He was on Popes Hill and advanced towards the Chess board trenches. He was in B squadron of the 1st Australian Light Horse regiment. Bryn has already provided a wonderful photo of the hill and the advance route up waterfall gully. Thanks mate !!. What I am after is a modern day photo of the trench line at Popes if they are still discernable, and also the chess board trenches where he actually fell. I understand there is a Turkish monument near the chess board. Thanks to anyone who may be able to assist. Best regards Aaron.
bluedog Posted 12 August , 2006 Share Posted 12 August , 2006 Aaron Spent 6 weeks in April/may this year on the battlefields and the amount of vegitation that has followed the Feb. rains would , I think , make it damn hard to get a good photo of Pope's Hill. Perhaps Eric ,"The Plummed Goose" can help you with that. As for the "Chessboard" , it now sports a car park , porta- loos and 'souvineer" stalls. The Turkish 57th. Regiment Memorial opposite the above is very good and well presented BUT do not visit on a weekend as the Turkish Government has decreed that all school children must visit the battlefields and up to 300 coaches per weekend is not unheard of. Hope this helps a little Peter ren must visit the e
bluedog Posted 12 August , 2006 Share Posted 12 August , 2006 Aaron Knew that I had it somewhere. Go to Google and type in "head of monash gully from the rear of quinns post" And there is the best photo that you will get. Taken after the 1994 bushfires Peter
