Guest percy' lad Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 Hi all, Was watching the news this morning about retouched war pics in of Beirut and it drew my mind back to a photograph taken during ww1, which showed a dead soldier in a shell hole with a black shellburst poised behind and above him, which looked not unlike a black Angel or somesuch, it allegedley had been retouched. I can't for the life of me remember who took it, when or where, I just know he's well known and it'[s striking, anybody know or can post as I would rather like to show somebody it. ta Nick
SiegeGunner Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 The photo is called 'Death the Reaper' and is by Frank Hurley. It is said to have been made by combining two negatives. More Hurley WW1 photos can be seen here: http://www.greatwar.nl/frames/default-hurley.html The manipulation of photographs by Hurley and others before and during WW1 is discussed here (Warning: 332 page pdf file): http://www.anu.edu.au/ITA/CSA/photomedia/ph_d.pdf Mick

Bernard_Lewis Posted 9 August , 2006 Share Posted 9 August , 2006 Though producing photos Hurley was criticsed for 'staging' some shots by including elements from different images. Bernard
