Matt Dixon Posted 25 October , 2003 Share Posted 25 October , 2003 Does anyone know why the headstones are lying flat as opposed to standing tall. having viewed a geological survey I was unable to find evidence that this was an area prone to subsidence. Terry Denham Posted 25 October , 2003 Share Posted 25 October , 2003 Matt This was discussed recently in another thread I seem to remember. The stones are flat because of the geological make-up of the soil. I believe that it was too sandy to be sure that the stones would remain upright even with their concrete beam just below the surface. The same occurs in a number of other cemeteries.
