Hi and welcome to the forum. I an tell you that 156 SB were made up of 4 x 8 in Howitzers when they went out to the Western Front in 09/09/16, as part of the 14th Heavy Artillery Group. They quickly joined 21st HAG 16/10/16 and then to 79th HAG 18/01/17 and back to 21st HAG 07/01/17. To 85th HAG 17/03/17, to 58th HAG 13/04/17; to 46th HAG 25/05/17; to 39th HAG 01/07/17; to 55th hAG 16/07/17; to 44th HAG 08/08/17; to 88th HAG 06/10/17. In late 1917 they became a 6 gun battery ending up under 47th HAG in Dec 1917, after which there was no further changes. In all this time no rest period is mentioned. You can see if diaries for these individual HAG’s are available in the NA under WO95 and track the progress of 156 SB through them and the batteries they fought alongside and where exactly.

Regards Paul

Hello

this bit refers I believe to the original document issued concerning the award of the medal

Local papers are your best source of info regarding how the medal was won - very few MMs got citations in the gazette

You can tell if he was in the war (serving in a theatre) before 1916 if he is due a 1914/15 star or 1914 star

47 Brigade RGA (HAG) formed part of the Fourth Army artillery. From August 1918 they took part in the Battles of the Hindenburg Line and the Advance to Victory ending their advance near the Forest of Mormal..

Hello

if he was in a theatre of war that would count for a star if before 1916 regardless of where he was

the trouble with MIC is that there can be one for the star and one for the bwm/victory - if seen it one a number of occassions

Why dont you try a seperate post asking specifically if this regimental number means anything - often you can tell unit details/enlistment etc from the number and it might give you a clue as to when he went into theatre

Ive found it best not to clog up a thread with too many questions as they can get missed if the forum is busy and the thread gets too long - we often go off on a tangent and the original question gets snowed under
