Gunboat Posted 1 August , 2006 Share Posted 1 August , 2006 When researching my grandfathers war history I read avidly anything that was connected with the RFA. The following is a written by a Corporal Morris Lee of the Royal Engineers who was talking about the retreat from the somme in March 1918. I was left profoundly moved by the image painted in my mind which I have tried on numerous occassions to recreate (with no success) and wondered if any of you fabulous artists would be interested in trying. I would love to see you efforts "I never took a 'glorified' view of war, the dead and the wounded I have seen, and desolation, have made me hate war more than ever, but nothing I have yet seen has sickened me more with the whole thing than the sight of those artillerymen thick with dust and nearly dead with fatigue. Strong fine-looking men were half doubled in their saddles - at a halt you would see many actually nod with sleep - eyes sunken, lips cracked, suffering, and without that merciful oblivion which comes to the wounded"
