Hi

I have this picture (unidentified unfortunately) and would welcome any thoughts on it. I am assuming it is not a serious portrait of one of the crew of HMS Loyal, but I might be mistaken?!?!?

Thanks

Tim

The King approved the formation of the Wrens on 28th Nov 1917, but this does not fit with what I understand to have been their uniform at that time. Where/what was HMS Loyal?

A quick google retrieves this

HMS Loyal - Built by Denny and co at Dumbarton and launched on the 11th November 1913. Served with the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla on completion. On the 17th October 1914, along with her sister ships Legion, Lance, Lennox and HMS Undaunted, they sank the German Torpedo-boats, S115, S117, S118 and S119 off Texel. later transferred to escort duties after 1917. Sold for breaking in November 1921.

But this just makes it more confusing.

I would guess that it the swetheart of one of the crew, dressed in his rig, as a momento.

That was my first thought, but the suit does fit rather well. It would be a coincidence if they had the same figure! Phil B

Its an intriguing one!

I am gradually tracking down lost family members who may be able to shed some light on the photo (and the others I have inherited)

After your info on 'Loyal' then I go along with Stephen's idea that it was a memento in borrowed rig. In the early stages I am fairly sure that there was no chance of a Wren serving afloat

I thought sailors wore them that way. Something to do with washing the decks. Or was it dancing the hornpipe? One of those quaint boaty things anyway. :) Phil B

The idea of a pretty girl in an uniform saying "loyal" is too much to take seriously ... it's either a personal sweatheart photo or a public one you could buy.

She's very wholesome, though, for a sailor, don't you think?

She's got a cigarette. Things were rapidly changing but a woman smoking in public was still frowned upon. So, to have your image, with a cigarette, immortalised in a photo strikes me as a little too risque. Therefore I would assume she is imitating a man, so this could well be her sweetheart's kit.

The trousers are a mile too long.

Marina

On the other hand, they are TROUSERS - women in trousers were still causing offence simply by wearing the things fifteen and twenty years later, so it is incredibly daring. I guess it is perhaps the equivalent of a nude photo of your wife/girlfriend today in terms of daringness?

Does she have grubby hands, or is it just a scanning artefact? If so, someone has gone the whole hog to make her look like a working sailor!

To confuse things further Loyal was ex-Orlando re-named 30.09.1913.

PS

Woman wearing her husbands rig.

There is a pic of a woman wearing her wounded husbands Royal Artillery uniform elsewhere on here.

The same could be said of a woman wearing a saliors uniform, but it doesn't seem to bother her. Even so, some women smoked during the war.
