Broznitsky Posted 21 October , 2003 Share Posted 21 October , 2003 In my quest to research the Russians who enlisted into the 41st and other Canadien Français CEF battalions, I have looked at many attestation papers. Many NOK addresses are given as below: Someplace Gubernia, Someplace2 Vesdoi, Someplace3 Volosti, Someplace4 Selo The Russian words are printed in the Western alphabet on the attestations as the men would have pronounced them to the poor French recruiting clerk, and not in the Cyrillic alphabet. Can anybody confirm that Gubernia means Governing Area, Volosti means Department, and Selo means Village?? I can't devine what Vesdoi might be Any philatelists amongst the Pals? michaeldr Posted 22 October , 2003 Share Posted 22 October , 2003 Peter, A quick check over the 'phone with a Russian speaker confirms your interpretation of Selo = village, so you're on the right track. Sorry can't help with the rest at the moment Regards Michael D.R.

michaeldr Posted 22 October , 2003 Share Posted 22 October , 2003 Peter, following on from this morning's post Gubernia = Province Volosti = District 'Vesdoi' should probably be 'Uezd' which = County Regards Michael D.R.
