Stebie9173 Posted 16 July , 2006 Share Posted 16 July , 2006 Yesterday's Local Paper printed this photo of an aerodrome that was unearthed at Wittering RAF Base, asking if people could identify the place. Can anyone ID the airfield from the combination of aircraft? What squadrons(s) and personnel were based there? What are the aircraft by the way? Numbers shown: C183 C1114 B8254 C7846? C645 C884? C*842 Thanks, Steve. P.S. Just to make it a little harder. Any idea of the name of the dog?
FAAAEd Posted 16 July , 2006 Share Posted 16 July , 2006 Can anyone ID the airfield from the combination of aircraft? This picture appears as Plate 26 in 'A Few of the First' by Bruce Lewis and is annotated as being St Omer in the summer of 1918. What are the aircraft by the way? Dolphin Posted 17 July , 2006 Share Posted 17 July , 2006 Steve The photograph, plus a detailed caption, appears in The SE 5a in Action by J F Connors [iSBN 0 89747 166 0]. No 1 Sqn RAF was based at Clairmarais South in mid-1918, so this seems a more likley location fot the photograph than St Omer. Unfortunately, the dog remains anonymous! Stebie9173 Posted 17 July , 2006 Author Share Posted 17 July , 2006 Of course, with Clairmarais being about a mile east of St Omer, I think you're both right! The Squadron based at Wittering until 2000 when it moved to RAF Cottesmore was No 1 Squadron... http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/hangar/2000/w...g/wittering.htm Includes a familiar picture! Thanks, chaps! Steve.
