Hi

a friend who knows I am into WW1 stuff asked me if I knew of a poem which starts :

"Trumeter"..........

and then goes onto list names of fallen etc ??

I have looked at my poetry books but cannot find it.

Could be pre WW1 but can anybody help me.

The was a poem of the name by Herbert Cody. Don't know if that's the one you want but it may be another lead.

I think what you have in mind is the song 'The Trumpeter', words and music by Raymond Newell and Ian Swinley. It is performed as a sort of mini 'operetta' - each verse starting with the words - 'Trumpeter...what are you sounding now...is it the call I'm seeking,' and it follows the men into battle - Reveille, the Charge etc. and ends with the names of the fallen being called - Trooper Jones...Trooper Richards....L/Cpl Jackson.......

I have it on the CD 'Your Country Needs You - Music from the Great War 1914-1918' in the IWM edition.

What's a trumeter then?

Also known as an "accurate meter". Usually used to record pedantry.

Your post only recorded a 3. Not up to your usual standard, David.

Re 1418 : A Trumeter is a Bugler who has had the P taken from him!
