Extra Equerry to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales 1909; Aide de Camp to the King 14 April 1910. Extra Equerry to the King May 1910. Commodore 2nd class in command of BALMORAL CASTLE on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to South Africa for the opening of the first Union Parliament, September to December 1910. CMG for this service 17 January 1911. Rear Admiral 19 April 1911; Rear Admiral in Second Battle Squadron 29 October 1912. Wemyss left this post pre war and raised his flag on EURYALUS on 24 October 1914. In command of squadron during the landing of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the Gallipoli Peninsula 25 to 26 April 1915 when the landing at the southern extremity of the Peninsula was carried out under his orders. In his dispatch dated 1 July 1915, Vice Admiral Robeck refers to Admiral Wemyss’s invaluable service and indefatigable efforts to further the success of the operations (London Gazette 16 August 1915). Rear Admiral Wemyss took part in the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula between 20 November 1915 and 9 January 1916. General Sir Charles Monro in his dispatch covering these operations says: - “We had a further stroke of good fortune in being associated with Vice Admiral Sir J. de Robeck and Vice Admiral Wemyss and a body of naval officers whose work remained throughout this anxious period at the standard of accuracy and professional ability which is beyong the power of criticism or cavil.” Acting Vice Admiral 2 December 1915; KCB 1 January 1916. Menioned in LT General Sir Percy Lake dispatch of 24 August 1916. Promoted Vice Admiral 6 December 1916. In the January 1919 NAVY LIST, he is an Acting Admiral.
