John Burnett

Recommended Posts

John Walker in Burntisland ROH as in Merchant Navy. Name on Memorial which was erected Oct 1921. (not added later)

Only one I can find that it may be is on CWGC and SNWM is this one who was killed 14/2/1918 age 25. His parents are given as John and Margaret Walker 13 Montrose Street Clydebanke and he was born in Hamilton.

Anybody got any other information to establish Burntisland connection?

The SS Carlisle Castle, built 1913, 4,325 grt, was sunk on 14th February 1918 by a torpedo from UB 57, 8 miles ExN from Royal Sovereign Lightship, English Channel. Owned by Union Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd of London, carrying a cargo of grain and general items.

Interestingly the UK Diving site below states that the cargo of Carlisle Castle was packed

with Howitzer shells and munitions. What was she up to !!

Two comments:

1 I assume the wreck has been correctly identified.

2 I suppose that the word general can accommodate just about everything!

Best wishes
