Lt Max Greville Jones MC (formerly 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers), and his observer 2Lt Thomas Ellison Brewer, of No 55 Sqn RAF, were flying in DH 4 A7650 when they were killed in action on 12 June 1918. The airmen had taken off from Azelot aerodrome on a height test, when they were involved in combat with a German two-seater over Cheneurières, during which they were shot down and killed.

The crew of A7650 are buried at Charmes, France.

No 55 Sqn was a day bomber unit of the 41st Wing, RAF, the nucleus of the Independent Force - the RAF's strategic bombing arm.

Lt M G Jones was credited with sending an Albatros D.V out of control on 30 September 1917 when flying in DH4 A7418 with AMII S L Leyland as his observer.

I hope that this helps.

For conspicuous coolness and ability in getting his men through wire under heavy fire during an attack. He did excellent work until he was wounded, clearing trenches and consolidating the position won.
