Remembered Today:

Lists of crews

Please can someone let me know where one would find lists of crews on specific ships at the NA?

Many thanks,

David

Lists of crews (muster lists) for Royal Navy ships were probably temporary after the 1870s (before that they were kept in large ledgers) and seem to have been weeded. Crew lists for merchant navy ships still exist.

The list of Officers for each ship appears in the Navy List.

David,

The only complete lists were the souls onboard lists which had to be landed when the ship sailed, these where not kept. You may be lucky and find the ships pay ledger. The best source of names by list on a ship I have come across are in the Surgeons Journals (ADM 101) they list the daily sick parade, and probably give a better insight as to life onboard than the Ships Log.

Hello

First, as previously mentioned, the ledgers were landed sometimes only after several months and if the ship were lost in that interim that information is lost.

The surviving ledgers do exist, but they are maintained at Hays in a secure location. Sadly, they exist now only for official queries and the facility is not open to the public for any reason.

That is not what you wanted to hear, but it is the sad situation.

There are occassional crew lists in the NA, but not as a rule.

All best

Is this not a case for someone in the National Archives to ask Hays if they can have the older ones? Hays might appreciate the space and they cannot really be much of a security risk after so many years.
