The top photograph is of the camera installation on a BE 2c.

The lower photograph is a Frank Hurley composite showing Martinsyde G.100s or G.102s (the aeroplanes were probably photographed in Palestine).

Interesting pictures. The camera installation on the BE-2c is a Williamson camera, which was commonly used through the First World War - and modern versions of the same maker's cameras are only just going out of RAF service on the Canberra this month!

Hopefully, when we get it all together, we're hoping to mount one (or similar) on our BE-2 replica next year (www.biggles-biplane.com)

As well as making the Williamson cameras at his workshops in Willesden, North London, James Williamson was an Edwardian pioneer movie maker. He also invented the gun camera used in both World Wars and the horse-racing photo-finish camera!

Frank Hurley was an Australian former postcard photographer who became world-famous when he photographed Shackletons epic Antarctic expedition. He was then an official War Photographer, travelling with the Australian Army in France, Gallipoli and Palestine. Some of his work can be seen on the official Australian War Memorial website at http://www.awm.gov.au/captured/official/hurley.asp
