paul guthrie Posted 30 June , 2006 Share Posted 30 June , 2006 In 1915 he tried unsuccessfully to ram a submarine. His ship was SS Brussels. 3 months later the ship was captured and he was shot as a franc tireur. U boats could kill civilians but civilians could not kill U boats. Marco Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 Or the other way around? U-boots warned vessels they were going to be sunk until vessels started to try ramming surfaced U-boots. Ramming done by secret order of Winston Churchill it was alleged in a doc I saw recently. If such attempt was ever done on my U-boot I would know what I would do the next time. The only reason Fryatt could do his attempt is because the U-boot made it presence known and gave time to abandon ship. From a PR viewpoint capture and imprisonment would have been better though.
