Pte Herbert Bowen is listed in CWGC as being 2 Bn Coldstream Guards, KIA on the 30/3/18.

I have his details from SDGW, thanks.

Can anyone tell me what happened on this day, please, and where the 2 Bn were located. I can see from SDGW that 3 Bn were having a tough time, but what were 2 Bn doing??

Many thanks in advance.

Racing T' - Don't know if this is of any use:

According to Battles & Engagements of the British Armies in France & Flanders 1914-1918 the Guards Division had been involved in the fighting during the First Battle of Arras on the 28th March.

2nd CG suffered the same fate as 3rd CG, both being in 1st Guards Brigade.

Heavily shelled on morning of 30th March and then attacked by infantry which

was successfully repulsed. 2nd CG were relieved the next day.

The Guards history mentions the engagement but looks at it from the 1st Guards

Bde point of view and only mentions 3rd CG. and the Coldstreams history hardly

touches on the incident except to mention that the 2CG were there with the 3rd Bn.

Will try and get more details of the actual location.

Got my facts wrong in the previous posting, 3rd CG no longer in 1st Bde in 1918,

instead being part of 4th Guards Bde with 31st Division.

Here's the gen I found last night.

30th March '18, following a heavy enemy artillery barrage on the morning of the 30th, an attack on 1st Guards Bde was delivered simultaneously with that on the front of 3rd Guards Bde. The enemy advanced up the railway line that ran between the villages of Hamelincourt and Moynneville and was broken up by deadly fire from 2nd Grenadiers. 2nd Coldsteams were placed in reserve on 31st March.

I hope this of use
