Guest mruk Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Cheers Nigel, I've sent you a PM. Info received on Messrs. Briggs and Goddard with gratitude and thanks. Best Wishes, Dave
Nigel Marshall Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 It's a nice bit of cropping, Nigel, and you were right to get rid of the tin and corrugated background. As George Formby was want to say: "It's turned out nice..." I'll have a look through the London Gazette later to see if I can find his citation. I wonder how many other streets are named after VC or medal winners? There's been a Blue Plaque raised to Albert Mountain in Garforth [Leeds] only recently. Or at least plans are underway. Apparently, he was the landlord of the 'Miner's Arms' for a short while. Cheers, Dave I have a scan form the local free rag about that Dave, did I not send you it? It'll have to be email because I don't know how to operate my wife's superfandango (official technical term, mind!) picture editor. Cheers, Nigel
Guest mruk Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Many Thanks, Nigel. The offer is very much appreciated, and it would give you at least the chance to use the 'superfandango' before using the more traditional means of E-mail. My Ma and Pa usually save the WW1 and local interest clippings for me, but I think this is one that they have missed after just calling them. Guest mruk Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 This is amazing, Nigel I live just down the road from a number of these streets in Leeds and I've never made the connection. I don't suppose many of those who actually live in Nettleton Court and Gibson Drive have either. Cheers, Dave
DMcNay Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 I know of one museum where the VCs on display are the genuine article. Apparently the glass case would take about six hours to get through, by which time Her Majesty's Constabulary would have long since arrived and carted you off... per ardua per mare per terram Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 I went to a Yeomanry Museum in the 70s or early 80s and they had a copy VC because of the value even then. Why on earth should they have the originals on display? Just to give the Pink Panther another case to creak into?
barrieduncan Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 Why on earth should they have the originals on display? I would have thought it would be better to have an original artifact on display in a museum than a copy. Would hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Louvre every year to see a copy of the Mona Lisa? Whats the point in having a VC collection if you can't show it? yellow Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 Why a museum would have a genuine VC on display is probably because the people who are running the museum are un-educated on the value of such a medal. Why genuine VC's cannot be shown on display in museums is because most museums cannot afford to insure them or they do not have the funds to provide suitable security to prevent theft. Perhaps if this government were more generous in preserving our heritage we would see more genuine VC's on display. Steve.
Sgt_Hazell_Great_Grandson Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 I am quite sure that most people do not realise that most VC`s on display are copies. What is the point of looking at a copy ? Roland.
Nigel Marshall Posted 5 April , 2007 Share Posted 5 April , 2007 The North Down Museum at Bangor Castle, the former family home of Barry Bingham VC (Jutland 1916), used to display his medal group, including his original VC. It got nicked about 5 years ago by an opportunist thief in broad daylight during a bank holiday when the place and the park around it were full of people. The would be thief was chased and arrested by an off duty RUC officer (that should give an idea of the date) and the medals were recovered. The museum stated afterwards that it would investigate the possibilities of redispalying the original VC group again, but they though the costs for insurance would be prohibitive. I do not know if the medals are back on display yet, but I will enquire. Curiously there was also an Army Gold Medal and Military General Service Medal pair from the Peninsula War period on display in the cabinet opposite, the thief made no attempt to steal those medals, so he must have recognised the VC. I'll let you know what the situation is regarding display or non display of the medals. Cheers, Nigel
Nigel Marshall Posted 16 April , 2007 Share Posted 16 April , 2007 This received from North Down Heritage Centre this morning. "Thank you for your inquiry. Currently a replica of the VC only , is on public display. It is still hoped that after specialist repair to one of the medals which was damaged in the attempted theft the set can go back on display, but this will be a matter for the Council to decide. As you can imagine there are security and insurance issues." Looks like it's a 'watch this space' type of situation with this VC group. Brian Curragh Posted 15 July , 2007 Share Posted 15 July , 2007 On a similar note the Somme Heritage Centre at Conlig has a copy of Billy McFadzean's VC combined with the real versions of his other medals while I believe the original VC is in the The Royal Ulster Rifles Museum in Belfast Brian
ianw Posted 16 July , 2007 Share Posted 16 July , 2007 As regards roads can I add Gort Crescent Sholing Southampton - and it is clearly the right man because surrounding roads include Portal Rd, Cunningham Crescent etc.
eviltaxman Posted 16 July , 2007 Share Posted 16 July , 2007 Another road name to add to the list is named after the area of the action Dan Burges was involved in, but the local council made a bit of a hash it...... the place was Doiran, but the road came out as Dorian Road in Bristol. Yorkshire Dragoon Posted 3 November , 2011 Share Posted 3 November , 2011 Just a quickie ... with regard to the Ormsby VC and Waller VC from Dewsbury... Both roads are next to each other having being created when a new stadium for our local rugby club was built alongside some industrial units. I have to say i can think of better ways to commerate our local hero's as these roads are only a few meters long. Tim Bickerdike
