Guest TommyGun Posted 21 June , 2006 Share Posted 21 June , 2006 Hello, I have just recived my Great Grand Father and his brothers medals. I have downloaded the Medal card. See enclosed. I need a bit of help with it. It is in a different format than most. I know the following: Joseph Brennan Private 3824 Irish Guards, His Disembarkation date is the 13-9-14 I'm guessing the following: So im thinking that he must have been with the 1st Batt (4th Guards Brigade, 2nd Division) as they left at this time. I was told he died in the war. If any one can interprit anything else on the Medal card this would be great.
Stebie9173 Posted 21 June , 2006 Share Posted 21 June , 2006 It's a 1914 Star Medal Card with the VM/BWM details stamped on. Private 3824 Jospeh Brennan, Irish Guards. 1914 Star (no reference to the Clasp for this medal. He either didn't qualify (unlikely) or didn't apply). i can't read the Medal Roll entry. VM & BWM - Again can't read the Roll Refs. Entitled to Silver War Badge - Honourable discharge from the Army, probably due to wounds. The remarks seem to tie in "Rxxxxxx Dis No Longer 26-11-15" probably mean Discharged under Kings Regulations No longer fit for duty. (Though the actual KR is not listed). THe SWB Roll will be IG Roll, page 34. Entered Theatre of war (had to be France for a 1914 Star) on 13-9-1914. Would have been with the 1st Irish Guards in 4th (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, and later with the Guard Division from Aug 1915(though he may have been wounded before then if discharged in November). Most Guards Service Records still exist. You may want to write to Wellington Barracks at Birdcage Walk to see if they still have it. They will probably charge a fee, but it will be well worth it, I think. Steve.
Stebie9173 Posted 21 June , 2006 Share Posted 21 June , 2006 He is not commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. He would have been discharged alive from the army as evidenced by his SWB, but may have died later. Soldiers that died from War Service, even after discharge, before 31-8-1921 should be commemorated on CWGC. Steve.
