historydavid Posted 10 June , 2006 Share Posted 10 June , 2006 The Admiralty requisitioned a large number of ships to act as colliers in order to keep their ships and bases supplied with coal, and these were classed as Auxiliaries to the Fleet. According to “British Vessels Lost at Sea” no less than 244 of these colliers were lost through enemy action. 1 Does anyone know of any Auxiliary colliers that were damaged by enemy action but not sunk? 2 Does anyone know of any Auxiliary colliers that were lost through accident, eg collision, wreck etc? Michael Lowrey Posted 11 June , 2006 Share Posted 11 June , 2006 David, You are misinterpreting BVLAS. The 244 figure includes losses to all causes: 193 to submarine, 22 to mine, 9 by collision, 19 wrecked, 5 various, 5 unknown. And the yearly collier listings does include the collisions etc. Best wishes, Michael
