stu Posted 6 June , 2006 Share Posted 6 June , 2006 Hi, I believe that the 156th Brigade RFA was a locally raised unit from the Camberwell area,it is possible that your grandfather enlisted in this unit. I'am certainly no expert on this matter and I'am sure that someone else can throw some light on this, but hopefully it might give you a starting point. Good luck. SilverSoldier Posted 6 June , 2006 Share Posted 6 June , 2006 Hello. I am not an expert either, have you obtained his MIC (Medal Index Card) from the National Archives? I recently obtained one for a distant relative who served in the RFA and a Brigade Number appeared on it. I dont know if this happens on many of them though. I am sure you will find a Pal that does know, members of the Forum are very helpful. Good luck in your search. Terry W.
olosangus Posted 7 June , 2006 Share Posted 7 June , 2006 Although he enlisted in Camberwell that does not necessarily mean that he would have been in either 156 or 162 brigade that were recruited locally to Camberwell. In fcat both of these brigades were formed in 1915 and moved to France in December 1915 which doesn't fit with the dates you have. I have found that artillery mic's usually only show the brigade in the case of men entitled to the 1914 star. Unless his service records have survived at the PRO you may have great difficulty tracking down which unit he actually served with. Sorry !
