Map Maple Copse during WW1

The present Maple Copse is situated just under the former original WW1 Maple Copse.

A dressing station was nearby.

A lot of graves were destroyed during the later fighting.

Vicinity of Maple Copse.

Stokes mortar bomb, Mills and Hales rifle grenade

Although these live projectiles have been laid there by a farmer, they are still leathal and moving or touching them is out of the question

Derek,

You wont regret it, and other cemeteries are very near : Hooge Crater, Sanctuary Wood, etc.

Also Shrewsbury Forest with its bunkers, Hill 62.

Cnock

Cnock,

My Great-Grandfather survived both Hooge and St.Eloi.

I've never visited Maple Cross but it is now top of my list.

  • 13 years later...

The German rifle grenade battery that was responsible for the death of Lieutenant Pope in May 1916 must have been fairly active as Charles James Silsby Canadian Mounted Rifles was also killed by a rifle grenade on 26 April 1916 and is also buried here. Will be visiting this weekend.
