Tommy Atkins Posted 18 May , 2006 Share Posted 18 May , 2006 Do any of you know of any well researched fiction/novels of life in the British Army in France/Belgium during The Great War. In the vain of Birdsong only without the first 100 pages sort of thing. A fighting platoon in The Sailient would be ideal?

IanA Posted 18 May , 2006 Share Posted 18 May , 2006 If you want an extended read, with the possibility of being drawn in further to the post war world, I suggest five books from the Henry Williamson extended series of 13 novels, collectively called 'A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight'. These are: 'How Dear is Life', 'A Fox Under my Cloak', 'The Golden Virgin', 'Love and the Loveless', and 'A Test to Destruction'. Henry Williamson served as a private in the London Rifle Brigade and took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. He was then commissioned into the Bedfordshie Regiment and was a transport officer with the Machine Gun Corps so he had much personal experience which he coupled with extensive research to create a rivetting narrative. Highly recommended. Cheers, Ian
