philrigger Posted 17 May , 2006 Share Posted 17 May , 2006 My grandfather, Frederick Francis Smith, served during WWI with the Worcestershire Regiment (No. 46855) and the Motor Machine Gun Service (No. 2452). It is believed that he also served in the Army prior to WWI. My Granny was from Templemore, Eire and we think that he met and married her there when he was stationed there while in the army. We do have evidence that he was employed as a 'Carrier' in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham in 1910. I know he drew an army pension. Would the pension records at Kew tell me which regiments my grandfather served in prior to 1914 ? 'We knew how to whinge but we kept it in the NAAFI bar'. Jonathan Saunders Posted 17 May , 2006 Share Posted 17 May , 2006 If he joined up pre-1914 it might be worth looking for his original attestation papers, which I think are filed alphabetically for a specific year range, so you wouldnt need service number or Regt.
