Can anyone provide any information on Oliver John Wade. He was killed in action on 22nd October 1916 and is on the Arras Flying memorial. He is also listed on the war memorial of St. Olaves Grammar School in Orpington. He was also in the 9th Battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regt.)

We have been told he was a pilot but have not been able to find out the circumstances of his death.

Thanks in advance,

John

2Lt O J Wade (formerly 9th Battalion, West Kent Regiment) [pilot] and 2Lt William Johnson Thuell [observer] of No 45 Sqn RFC were flying in Sopwith 1½ Strutter 7786 when they were killed in action on 22 October 1916. A flight from No 45 Sqn had left Fienvillers aerodrome on an Offensive Patrol at 1015 and three aircraft were lost in the action that claimed 2Lt Wade's machine, and another was damaged but made it back to Allied territory. 7786 was probably shot down by Leutnant Erwin Böhme of Jasta 2 at 1050. 7786 was Ltn Böhme's fifth victory of his eventual twenty-four; he was killed in action on 29 November 1917 in combat with an AWFK 8 of No 10 Sqn.

I hope this helps

Many thanks to all of you for your prompt help. Peter Leonard wanted to know our interest in him. He is my wife's second cousin (twice removed). Oliver was the only child and all we know of him is what was passed down through the family.

Thanks again

John

Could any RFC experts provide any information about the circumstances of the death of 2/Lt Oliver Wade, who after being reported missing was eventually confirmed killed in action on 22 October 1916 while serving with 45 Squadron RFC? I have his service record which has excellent correspondence about his death but little by way of "technical" detail.

Hi, according to the book "Sky their battlefield" 2nd Lieut Wade flew in Sopwith Strutter 7786 left Baupaume-Peronne at 10.15 am with his observer 2nd Lieut G B Samuels. He was involved in combat over Les Boeufs and was shot down by the German Ace Ltn E Bohme from Jasta 2.

It would be worth visiting the National Archives at Kew to obtain Squadron Records/combat reports as they should tell you everything or alternatively instruct a researcher to do it.

Mike.

Hi Chris,

This is one that you are researching for me. There is another thread on the forum concerning him with a little more about the circumstances as well.

Thanks for the first lot -cheque posted today!

Hello John - by now (Post Office willing) you will have Oliver's service record - but as you will have seen, Forum members often tease out things the archives don't have!

There is a very detailed description of the event in "Under the Guns of the Kaiser's Aces" by Norman Franks and Hal Giblin. The description includes a photo of Wade and Thuell, as well as of Boehme. This was his fifth victory out of an eventual total of twenty-four.
