Nigel Marshall Posted 13 May , 2006 Share Posted 13 May , 2006 I apologise if this has already been covered. On my Great Uncle's MIC, he is shown as transferred to Z class reserve. I was lead to believe that Z reserve was one of two things. 1. Duration man being de-mobbed but kept on reserve in case the armistice broke down. or 2. A man left unfit for further active service but fit enough to carry out garrison duties. Herein lies my problem. My great uncle was Sapper Andrew Cyril Kilkenny, who died shortly after the war ended. Thus he could not be transferred anywhere. Is this just a simple clerical 'misteak', or have I missed something important? Thanks in advance, Nigel
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 13 May , 2006 Share Posted 13 May , 2006 Class "Z" was the normal Transfer to the Reserve pending discharge, unless your Great Uncle had been discharged previously due to other Causes{ie:KR's 392 etc} then Cl.Z would be the usual route
Nigel Marshall Posted 13 May , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2006 Hmmm, I'm still puzzled. He died 22/11/1918 in Egypt while still serving. I think your explanation of the Z reserve fits quite well with my first option, it just doesnt fit Uncle Syd! Thanks though
bernardmcilwaine Posted 14 May , 2006 Share Posted 14 May , 2006 i havent seen any ref to men being transferred to class Z in 1918,all those in the medal rolls that i have, began in the first months of 1919,it must be a mistake in his entry, bernard
