Pals

One of the men I'm researching is Private Joseph BRAY.

CWGC -

Private 2288660, 2nd Bn., South Wales Borderers, Date of Death 15/10/1918

SDGW -

Private 2288660, 1st Bn., Monmouthshire Regiment, Date of Death 25/10/1918

MIC -

Private 2288660, Monmouthshire Regiment (previously 21632, South Lancs. Regt.)

So was he with 1st Monmouthshires or 2nd SWB, and did he die on 15th or 25th October?

Grateful for any clarification.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll record him as SWB, and as you say, it's a question of put luck on the dates.

Cheers

Stepehen,

There were battalions from both the SWB and the Mons in the 29th Div, and thus at 4th Ypres and beyond, with the Second Army.

He is buried at Ledeghem, which was fought around during mid October 1918 and by 25th Oct they were past Courtrai and at Ooteghem. So my money would be on 15th October as the correct date.

As to unit - the Mons were I believe pioneers. Maybe having already been in the South Lancs he had been transferred to the Mons as a pioneer? Maybe an expert with the numbers could tell more?

got him

Medal card of Bray, Joseph

Corps Regiment No Rank

Lancashire Regiment 21631 Private

Monmouthshire Regiment 228860

no mention of SWB

(Stephen i think you twitched with your index finger with the numbers.)

SWB under J Bray but no mention of other units

Medal card of Bray, J

Corps Regiment No Rank

South Wales Borderers 228860 Private

With no cross indexing on these cards its little wonder there are inconsistencies in the casualty records.

(PS There is another Joseph (chas) Bray in the Mons / Royal engineer and Worcester

387919. 7919, 2643.)
