jhill Posted 10 May , 2006 Share Posted 10 May , 2006 Copies of some of the relevant War Diaries for this period are available on the Canadian Archives site . The 1st leinsters formed part of the 82nd Brigade of the 27th Division. Unfortunately, the Leinsters seem not to have been great diary keepers and all we have is this One Page Summary . It states that the Battalion was in the line from the night of April 19/20 to May 4. Curiously, the diary of the D.C.L.I. states that the Leinsters were attacked with gas on the morning of May 5th at Sanctuary Wood. This could be explained in many ways. It may not be an error. During the tour 4 officers and 27 other ranks were killed or died of wounds, and 2 officers and 107 O.R.'s were wounded. Possibly, one of these was your man, assuming he did not die of his wounds until May 9th.
