Remembered Today:

Help with service number?

I'm fairly new to researching medals and just needed a little help if possible. I have a BWM with the regt number 22986 and named to Pte E. Owen Manch R. I've searched through the national archive medal index cards and the CWGC. I've found entries in both for Pte E Owen, Manchesters but in the CGWC the service number is 23/22986. Does the 23/ in front of the 22986 mean that it is a different soldier from the one named on my medal, the MIC also has no entry that this soldier was killed. Sorry if this is a basic question but i'm trying to learn as i go!

Thanks for any help

No all it means is that he was in the 23rd Battalion, however these prefixes were not always put on the Medals or other documentation, the MiCs do not always record KiA.etc, but I expect the Roll Page will.

Nothing on the CWGC as to being killed in action KIA. Enoch Owen seems to have survived the war.
