Robert Dunlop Posted 28 April , 2006 Share Posted 28 April , 2006 The Avro 504 was used in the Middle East. Does anyone know what colour scheme/s were used? Thanks, Robert.
Dolphin Posted 28 April , 2006 Share Posted 28 April , 2006 Robert Without doing any research on the subject, but relying on memory, I'd say that there would have been three main Avro 504 colour schemes in Egypt: allover clear doped linen, ie a light fawn shade; PC10 (chocolate brown with a greenish tinge when freshly doped) upper surfaces and clear doped under surfaces; and PC12 (reddish-brown upper surfaces, designed to be better fabric protection in areas of harsh sunlight) and clear doped under surfaces. I hope this is useful. Gareth
FAAAEd Posted 28 April , 2006 Share Posted 28 April , 2006 Robert PC12 (reddish-brown upper surfaces, designed to be better fabric protection in areas of harsh sunlight) and clear doped under surfaces. I hope this is useful. Gareth For fabric protection white was often used to reflect as much light as possible. This was certainly true in the era of the Fairey Swordfish but WRT the Avro 504 in the ME during WW1 I wouldn't like to express an opinion. Sadly one person that I knew who knew, a grandfather, has long since passed on. There are some B&W (well sepia toned) images on my web site but they perhaps won't tell you much.
