Adrian Posted 30 September , 2003 Share Posted 30 September , 2003 Was there such a rank in the Royal Garrison Artillery as "Sergeant Instructor"? At the moment it's a 2-2 draw for this man, who served in a Siege Battery and died in 1917, between Sergeant (CWGC/SDGW) and this other rank, which was given in a newspaper obituary and in a Roll of Honour. Also, was "King's Company" an alternative name for the 1st Bn of the Grenadier Guards, or was it a company within the battalion? Any help gratefully received. Muerrisch Posted 30 September , 2003 Share Posted 30 September , 2003 As to the RGA Sgt Instructor, I believe this to be an appointment for a Sergeant, but you need an artillery expert. The Sovereign's Company of the Grenadier Guards 1st Battalion is picked for height and bearing, and performs important ceremonial tasks as of right. Amongst other things, it has a unique Colour, with the Sovereigns's cipher on the crimson background. This Colour is placed on, and buried with, the Sovereign's coffin, which is borne by picked men from the company and commanded by the CSM. It is fair to say that the company, being the senior one of the senior [infantry] regiment of the British Army, is the senior of all.
