Bob Coulson Posted 23 April , 2006 Share Posted 23 April , 2006 Would be grateful for any info on the battalion at the Battle of Broodseinde, looking into Capt Lawrence Gjers who was KIA with them. Bob.
Malcolm Posted 23 April , 2006 Share Posted 23 April , 2006 Putting the date into the search on www.snwm.org gives 503 dead of whom 130 are Seaforths. In the Passchendaele day by day account by Chris McCarthy it gives: 10th Brigade attacked at 6am with 2nd Seaforth Highlanders and with the 3/10th Manchesters in support, crossed the Laudetbeek Marsh and lost direction. The Brigade came under mg fire from its left flank. The Seaforths, reinforced by some Middlesex, acheived their first objective, a line on the road on the far side of 19 Metre Hill. After pausing for an hour they continued their attack but , still under mg fire they abandoned it and consolidated. At 3pm the Germans counter-attacked and came within 80 yards of the Brigade's position but were driven back when the 1st E Lancs ( 11 Brigade) and the 1st Royal Waricks came to assist. A gap between 4th Division and 29th Division on the left was filled at nightfall by two companies of the 1st Warwicks. At 5pm the enemy were seen massing for another attack but were scattered by artillery fire. The line at the end of the day was as follows: Ferdan House - Kangaroo Huts -west of Tragique Farm - 19 Metre Hill. Touch was made with troops on both flanks.
