182 CEF Posted 28 September , 2003 Share Posted 28 September , 2003 I picked up a bunch of WW1 maps from a fellow in Germany, they had come out of an estate sale over there. There are 4 1914 dated German maps that are around Ypres and area, and several British linen maps. However there is also a paper trench map dated March 1918 (British). I have never seen a British Trench Map that is not mounted on linen. Is this common? I was told that the Grandfather had been a WW1 German Vet. I wonder if the British linen maps were Captured, as many of them date 1912-1914. I wish I knew the story of how this man got all of these maps!! Paul Reed Posted 28 September , 2003 Share Posted 28 September , 2003 Paper maps were not uncommon, but they were normally specially produced sheets or situation maps. They are particularly common among small scale maps such as 1/5000 and 1/2500. Many examples exist at the PRO and IWM in the UK. In Canada common ones cover such places as Courcelette and Vimy.
