Evening All,

I'd just had a phone call from an old lady in the Shetlands whose uncle is on Barry's Roll of Honour. He was:

Sjt. Charles Cowan Thomason 9th Bn. Black Watch KIA 26/10/15

She told me that her father woke up on board his ship the night Charlie died to see him standing in front of him dressed in his full Black Watch uniform. Spooky.

I just wondered whether any Pals could supply me with any further info on Sjt Thomason, how, where he died etc. Seems strange he's on a RoH in South Wales.

Thanks,

Jonathan

The Black Watch seem to have taken men from everywhere, even early in the war. My great-uncle below - from Peterborough, enlisted London in May 1915. Not a drop of Scottish blood.

Anyway:

The 9th Black Watch were entering Trenches near Loos that day.

War Diary,

26th October 1915

TRENCHES IN C1

Battn took over positions in Sector C1 immediately south of HULLOCH ROAD from 7th R. SCOTS FUSILIERS occupying old British Support Trench in Brigade Reserve. 3 men killed by an enemy shell as the men were taking over line. 47th Division on our immediate right, 46th Inf. Bde. (of our own Division on our left)

Charles Thomason was probably one of those 3 men killed by the enemy shell.

Hope this helps,

Steve.
