Remembered Today:

CSM Billy Legge, Grenadier Guards

Hello,

I’m hoping someone can help me out here as I can’t find anything on a certain CSM Billy Legge at the NA site.

I have a photo of him wearing a soft trench cap with Grenadier Guards badge, a 5 buttoned tunic without pleats on the pockets and GG collar dogs.

After doing a close up of his cap badge, it looks as though it isn’t a plain GG badge but, this could be just a reflection from somewhere.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Are you sure it was GG you saw?

I thought they removed them before going overseas.

Could he be Honourable Artillery Company who wore Grenade badge with HAC on it?

If he is GG then SNCO's had Royal Cypher on their Grenade.

Any chance you can post the photo?

I couldn't find him either Ian.

Owen,

You may be right, I'm not too clever with cap badges. Here's a close up of his cap badge.

Thanks

Very definately NOT Grenadier Guards or Canadian GG. I'd go with RF too

Can we have close up of belt buckle?

I don't believe it to be Great War either, surely post-war with collar dogs?

He may only have been a Private in the War and CSM after so that's why there are no CSM W Legges on NA.

Here's his buckle. The buttons look like they have the same pattern as on the RF badge.

The best I could find on the NA was acting Sergeant Lamber H Legge.

If the photo is post war, shouldn't he at least be wearing the 14/15 Star ribbon or oversea stripes? Assuming someone of that rank served from the beginning.

Could he be in the London Regt. RF? Just found this person:

William P Legge

London Regiment 2900 Private Acting Company Quarter Master Serjeant

Labour Corps 207352 Company Serjeant Major

He was wounded in the war at some stage. There is a wound stripe on his left arm

It gets interesting:

Taken from the 1901 census:

Father was Arthur Paul Legge, a German subject born in Westfalen, 1862

Mother was Clara Legge, a German subject born in Mecklenburg, 1864

Billy had two brothers William (2 Billy Legges in the same family  ) and Albert and a sister Louise. I haven't checked who his brothers sided for but I wonder ........

Billy is down as Paul Legge on the 1901 census and William Paul Legge on his birth certificate. The family already lived in Tottenham in 1901 and Billy was born in Edmonton.

I think I may have found a very interesting soldier, does anyone want to donate his medals to me?
