roger Posted 15 April , 2006 Share Posted 15 April , 2006 Phil, I don't know the answer to your question but the correct name is Bosuns call. Roger
joseph Posted 15 April , 2006 Share Posted 15 April , 2006 Phil, The “Boatswains Call” as it is has been known since 1671, has been used to pass orders in English ships since the days of the crusade, the earliest date with certainty is, 1248. It is also worn as a badge of rank by the lord high admiral and is now the badge of office of the Chief Bosuns Mate, Quartermasters and Bosuns Mates. The ones I have have dates on and they are all the same probable not changing much since 1671. So I would say unless there is a distinguishing mark on the call it would be very hard to date. PhilB Posted 15 April , 2006 Author Share Posted 15 April , 2006 Would the dated ones be marked with the broad arrow? Phil B
joseph Posted 15 April , 2006 Share Posted 15 April , 2006 I have them marked with the broad arrow and a date also inscribed as gifts and presentations. They come in several diffrent metals, silver and silver plate being the most common. Regards Charles
