Remembered Today:

Alias

This is CWGC's device for recording a name under which a man served but which was not the real family name.

Many men served under a false name for various reasons and, to make searching for a particular individual easier, CWGC records both names as separate entries. Therefore such men have two entries although only one is counted for all CWGC's statistics.

Such 'false' entries are denoted by the word 'ALIAS' under the 'Regiment' field and usually have 'See XYZ, the true family name' under the 'Additional Information' field. This Alias entry does not have the full details, however. The full entry under the person's real name usually has '(Served as ABC') under 'Additional Information'.

Note that, because all 'Regiments' have to be allocated to a 'Nationality' in the database (and 'ALIAS' is a 'Regiment' for this purpose), all 'ALIAS' entries are recorded as 'United Kingdom' whereas, they could be Canadian, Australian etc. The full entry bears the correct unit nationality as it shows the full data including the true 'Regiment'. This is a simple way of not confusing the regimental statistics with duplicate alias entries.

Several threads have discussed the use of alias names on this form. The one I always recall by his alias (I can't remember his real name) is listed om the Menin Gate as Bloggs, J served as DUTY, A
