royal naval air service medal numbers

im am going to look at a pair of medals with a view to buying them the seller tells me he was in the royal naval air service i seem to remember reading that you can tell rnas medals from the numbering is this correct and if so what am i looking for

Hi Dave,

Normally an RNAS rating would have an official number between F1 and F55000. However there is also a possibility that if he was only attached to the RNAS he might have a normal RN number. If his rank is given as Air Mech then obviously he was RNAS. I would be able to give you details of the man from his name or number if I was at home, but as I am at present sitting onboard in Port Said, I havn't got my data base available until I get home on the 20th
